Woman dies following Manhattan pedestrian accident

Many people in Manhattan choose to walk to get from place to place. Unfortunately, even the pedestrians who make sure they only cross streets in a crosswalk when they have a walk sign can be injured by drivers who fail to yield the right of way. Police in New York claim that a recent fatal pedestrian accident was caused by such a driver.

According to police reports, the accident happened just after 4 a.m. one morning on a day in mid-March. The 56-year-old victim was reportedly crossing in a crosswalk with a light when she was allegedly struck by a privately owned sanitation truck. Although her injuries initially appeared minor, she died approximately two hours after the accident.

Police say that the driver of the truck remained at the scene. The driver reportedly also had a green light, but he has been cited for failing to yield the right of way. A person who works in the area claims that the intersection is risky because of dangerous drivers.

As a result of the Manhattan pedestrian accident, a family is likely mourning the loss of their family member. In addition to their grief, they will also have to cope with the financial ramifications of their loss, including hospital expenses, loss of wages and funeral costs. Many who have lost a loved one as a result of another's negligence -- including failing to yield the right of way to a pedestrian in a crosswalk -- have chosen to seek recompense by filing a lawsuit in a civil court. In many cases, a successfully presented case resulted in an award of damages to help with such ramifications.
