New York pedestrian accident claims a woman's life

According to the city's Department of Transportation, pedestrian deaths account for approximately 52 percent of the traffic fatalities in New York. This staggering death rate has left many residents questioning whether enough is being done to reduce these deaths. Despite the efforts of many safety advocacy groups, a recent pedestrian accident has tragically claimed another victim.

A woman in New York was hit by a Metropolitan Transportation Authority bus when she attempted to cross a busy intersection. The pedestrian accident occurred as the woman was reportedly crossing Broadway near 74th Street in Queens. The bus was attempting to make a right turn from Roosevelt Avenue onto Broadway when it struck the woman.

Emergency crews responded to the accident, but were not able to save the victim. She was pronounced dead at the scene as a result of the injuries she suffered. Charges have not been filed against the bus driver at this time. Police have indicated that they will continue to investigate the accident.

Should the police investigation show that the driver of the bus acted with negligence in the deadly pedestrian accident, the surviving family members of the victim may elect to file a wrongful death claim in civil court. New York wrongful death laws allow surviving family members to seek financial restitution for losses suffered as a result of another party's negligent actions. The loss of a loved can be devastating, both emotionally and financially. In addition to providing a much-needed financial recovery, families may also find that a successfully litigated claim provides them with a sense of closure as they attempt to navigate the grief process.
