Fatal car accident caused by alleged drunk driver

Police in New York recently arrested the driver they believe is responsible for a fatal crash. According to reports, charges against this individual include driving while impaired. Two people are said to have lost their lives in the car accident due to the actions of this allegedly drunk driver.

In the evening of Sunday, April 3, a pickup truck was struck by a sedan on Long Island. The driver of the pickup was supposedly attempting to make a left-hand turn when the vehicle was hit. The occupants of the truck — an elderly couple, ages 67 and 66 — were transported to a medical facility for treatment. Sadly, both individuals were pronounced dead shortly after their arrival.

The driver of the sedan — a 23-year-old male — was also injured in the wreck. He was taken to another hospital for the treatment of non-life threatening injuries. After being treated, he was arrested and charged with a DUI. It is unknown if any further charges are expected to be filed in this case.

Losing a loved one in an accident with a drunk driver can, understandably, be devastating. It is something that no one should have to endure. In this particular case, the surviving family members of the victims may be able to seek compensation for their losses. Wrongful death claims may be filed in a New York civil court in an effort to seek monetary damages. If successful, taking such action can provide financial relief for the numerous economic losses likely experienced as a result of taking care of the victims’ end-of-life matters, and even provide a sense of justice, peace and closure.
