A bicyclist in New York recently suffered serious injuries after being struck by a dump truck. This truck accident reportedly occurred in the early morning hours of Sept. 23., in Manhattan. According to reports, the truck driver failed to stop after the crash.
A 54-year-old male was riding his bike southbound on 8th Avenue when he was hit by the dump truck at the 40th Street intersection. The force of impact caused the victim to be thrown from his bicycle. He was transported to Bellevue Hospital for treatment. Due to the severity of his injuries, one of his legs needed to be amputated. His other leg is said to have been badly crushed.
At this time, it is unknown if the driver believed responsible for this collision has been identified. Police have not indicated that any arrests have been made or that any citations are pending in this case. This incident is still under investigation.
Sadly, the outcome of this auto-pedestrian truck accident is a common one. The victim has suffered injuries that will change his life forever. When the driver believed responsible is found, the victim may be entitled to pursue civil actions against him or her in an effort to seek compensation for the numerous losses sustained as a result of this event. Through the successful litigation of personal injury and any other applicable legal claims, a New York court may award the victim monetary damages for both his current and future losses — such as medical expenses, rehabilitation costs, lost wages, disability and any non-economic damages that are deemed recoverable.
