Spine injury symptoms often seen following a car accident

Whether an auto collision is considered minor or severe, those involved may suffer injuries that can have long-lasting effects. Following a car accident, it is not uncommon to experience some form of injury to the spine. Of course, the location of the injury and the extent of the damage will have an effect on the severity of the symptoms experienced and one’s prognosis. New York residents who have suffered such injuries due to the negligence of others may be entitled to seek compensation for their losses.

When injuries to the spine occur, there are a number of symptoms that one might have. Some may be mild and temporary, while others may be more severe and cause permanent damage. Common spine injury symptoms include:

  • Loss of sensation

  • Muscle spasms

  • Mild to intense pain

  • Difficulty breathing

  • Loss of movement

Some spine injuries can lead to partial or complete paralysis. Partial, or incomplete, paralysis causes part of the body to lose motor and sensory functions. Complete paralysis, on the other hand, is a total loss of these functions. Again, depending on the severity of the injury, paralysis may or may not be permanent. Every case is different.

Spine injuries can, and often do, change the lives of those affected — and not for the better. These injuries require extensive care and rehabilitation, and there are no guarantees that one’s life will ever again be the same. One who suffers such injuries as a result of a car accident may choose to seek relief for any economic and non-economic damages sustained. This can be done by filing personal injury and any other applicable claims in a New York civil court. Through successful litigation, a monetary judgment may be awarded.
