PTSD may result from a serious car accident

A lot of people may only think of the physical injuries that are suffered in serious auto collisions. The truth is, though, traumatic stress may also be experienced. If a New York resident suffers post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of a car accident caused by another person, he or she may be entitled to seek damages.

According to the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, every year an estimated 1 percent of the United States population is injured in automobile accidents. That is roughly three million people. This is why motor vehicle accidents are thought to be one of the most commonly experienced traumas.

Research on the subject of mental health problems tied to car accidents has shown that about 9 percent of those who survive major auto collisions develop PTSD. Of that 9 percent, most also develop depression and anxiety disorders. Several variables have been identified that are believed to contribute to one experiencing PTSD or other mental health issues following a serious crash. These include:

  • Poor social support

  • Extent of injuries suffered

  • Loss of loved one

  • Rate of recovery

  • Physical limitations

Sadly, many car accident victims who suffer PTSD are not diagnosed for months following the event. This is usually because they do not really think about the need for psychological treatments or they do not want to bring up the subject to their medical providers. When a diagnosis is made, however, therapy and medication can be used to treat the issue, both of which can be extremely effective.

According to the laws of New York, those who have been injured in auto accidents that are caused by the negligent actions of others may seek compensation for their losses. This includes damages related to any resulting mental health issues, such as PTSD. If, with the assistance of an experienced personal injury attorney, one is able to establish in court that his or her psychological damages resulted from a car accident caused by the negligence of another party or parties, monetary relief may be awarded.
