What should you do after an Uber accident?

Ridesharing apps, such as Uber and Lyft, have exciting plans for the future. Uber has tested self-driving cars in New York, and it has reportedly sought to test these vehicles in nearby Pennsylvania.

For the time being, these companies still rely on human drivers. Every person can make a mistake, which means you could end up in a car accident as a passenger in an Uber or Lyft. You may not have sustained serious injuries, but there is still protocol you need to abide by. Although you may not have been the one behind the wheel, there are actions to take following such a collision.

The process

In the aftermath of an Uber accident, you still want to see a doctor shortly afterward. Even if the collision does not seem that severe, you can still experience whiplash that requires medical attention. You need to see a physician within 24 hours of the crash, even if you were a passenger. Here are other steps to take in case you end up filing a claim:

  • You need to make sure everyone in all involved vehicles is all right. When calling the police, you may need to request an ambulance to take someone to the hospital.
  • Next, you should call 9-1-1 to have the police come out to the scene. You will need a police report if you wish to file a claim later.
  • Take as many photos as you can from the accident scene. This includes exterior and interior damage to both vehicles.
  • Get everyone's contact and insurance information. Use this time to take pictures of all vehicles' license plates.
  • See if any eyewitnesses in the vicinity can provide additional details about the crash.
  • Jot down important details about the crash. For example, if the Uber driver was talking to someone over the phone during the crash, you want to remember that.
  • Do not do anything during this time to escalate the situation.
  • Get in touch with your insurance company to let them know what happened.

Rideshare accidents can create complex issues for accident victims. It is prudent to seek the advice, guidance and representation of a personal injury lawyer. Unraveling coverage issues and fighting for meaningful compensation after an accident should not be taken for granted.
