Police in New York have arrested the man believed responsible for an auto collision that left one person dead and others injured. The multi-car accident occurred Saturday, Dec. 29, 2018, in lower Manhattan. The surviving family members of the deceased, as well as the injured victims, may be entitled to seek compensation for their losses through legal means.
According to reports, a 37-year-old male was operating his vehicle on West Street when he lost control and slammed into a Honda. The force of impact flipped the Honda, killing its driver. Instead of stopping, the man continued on hitting two other cars, causing injury to two people. He finally came to a stop after striking two parked cars. Thankfully, those last two vehicles were unoccupied.
After his vehicle came to a stop, the man who police say was responsible for the wreck tried to flee the scene. Police were able to apprehend him without incident. This individual has since been charged with manslaughter and leaving the scene.
This multi-car accident has negatively affected the lives of several people. One family is now dealing with the loss of a loved one — which can be both emotionally and financially draining, — while the injured victims are left working on their recoveries and handling the psychological and economic impact this event has had on their lives. According to New York laws, victims of negligent drivers or — in the event of fatality — their surviving family members may pursue compensation for their losses by filing any civil claims applicable to their cases in court. Legal counsel can help one file the appropriate claims and then work toward achieving relief through the negotiations process or litigation.
