5 steps to take after an NYC subway accident

It is no secret that the subway system in New York City is heavily used. Millions of commuters, tourists and students depend on this method of mass transit every day. With so many people using trains, it is no wonder that accidents are common.

According to the New York Post, which calls the subway system a “death trap,” 150 individuals die every year by getting struck by trains, either by accidentally falling onto the tracks or because of suicide. This does not even include the people who get hurt or die because of defective tracks, equipment malfunctions and human error. If you use the NYC transit system, it is vital for you to know what to do if you get hurt.

1. Notify an official

If you are conscious and able to move and communicate safely after a subway accident, look for a Metropolitan Transportation Authority employee or another uniformed official. Inform this individual about the details of the accident. Get the name and contact information of this employee.

2. Take pictures

Try to get as many photos of the incident as possible. Document the conditions and causes of the injury, such as broken equipment, blocked pathways, slippery floors or inadequate warning signs.

3. Talk to witnesses

See if you can identify anyone who may be a witness to your injury. This may include fellow passengers or bystanders. Even if an individual did not see the accident occur, it may be valuable to get someone to validate your injuries and the aftermath. Request contact information for anyone who may want to testify on your behalf.

4. Get medical attention

If you have severe injuries, call 911 for an ambulance, or go to an emergency room. Otherwise, seek out an urgent care facility, or make an appointment with your physician as soon as possible, even if your injuries seem minor.

5. Consider filing a lawsuit

Getting hurt by an NYC subway can leave you with unaffordable medical bills and lost time from your job. A personal injury lawsuit may be able to get you compensated for these losses.
