Truck accident in New York claims cyclist's life

Police in New York are investigating a recent accident that resulted in the death of a cyclist. The victim is the first cyclist to die in New York City this year. This particular incident involved a commercial box truck. Depending on the circumstances of this truck accident, the victim's surviving family members may be entitled to seek compensation for their losses.

According to reports, on Thursday, Jan. 30, at approximately 3 p.m., a cyclist was riding on Vandervoort Avenue when the driver of a box truck attempted a U-turn and struck him. The victim -- a 41-year-old male -- was transported to a Brooklyn area hospital with head injuries. Sadly, he was pronounced dead soon after his arrival at the medical facility.

The truck driver -- a 54-year-old male -- is said to have struck several parked cars as well as the cyclist. He did stay on the scene, and is said to be working with authorities. As of the latest report, no charges have been filed against this individual. It is unclear if any charges are expected in this case.

Sadly, it is not uncommon for a cyclist versus truck accident to have this kind of ending. For the victim's family, there are undoubtedly more questions than answers at the moment. There is also grief, pain and significant loss -- both economic and noneconomic in nature. If truck driver negligence is believed responsible for this event, it may be possible for this victim's family to seek relief for their losses through legal means. With the assistance of counsel, they may file a wrongful death suit against the driver and his employer in a New York civil court in an effort to seek a monetary judgment for all legally recoverable losses.
