Why not to decline medical examination after car accident

Even collisions that seem insignificant can cause injuries with long-term consequences. For that reason, it is always a good idea to have a medical examination after any car accident in New York or elsewhere. Injuries could remain hidden for days, and left untreated, some may be life-threatening.

Whiplash could lead to headaches and neck stiffness that could blow over soon, but it could also indicate something serious like a concussion, swelling or bleeding on the brain. Whiplash injuries could happen even at speeds as low as 14 miles per hour. Any rapid movement of the head and neck can cause the brain to smash into the inner skull, causing damage to brain cells.

Traumatic brain injuries could cause depression, personality changes, impaired memory and concentration ability. Hearing or vision problems can also indicate TBI. It is not uncommon for accident victims to suffer post-traumatic stress disorder. This could also happen if the lives of loved ones were lost in the accident.

Back pain should also not be ignored because even minor pain could turn out to be vertebrae damage, and when it leads to loss of feeling in the arms and hands, there might be neck or spinal column damage. When bruising turns to a deep purple color and the accident victim experiences dizzy spells, it could indicate internal bleeding from organ damage. Such an injury could be life-threatening and require emergency medical treatment.

If another party's negligence caused the car accident, the injured victim might have grounds to pursue financial relief through the New York civil justice system. However, without proof of medical expenses, there will be no evidence of personal injury. For that reason, medical treatment as soon as possible after the accident, along with follow-up care, can form the basis of a claim. An experienced personal injury attorney can document the monetary damages and provide further support and guidance throughout ensuing legal proceedings.
