Woman charged with driving under the influence after crash

A young woman in New York is facing criminal charges following a recent car crash. This incident resulted in a passenger in her automobile suffering critical injuries. She has been charged with driving under the influence resulting in bodily harm. This is considered a felony offense.

According to reports, in the early morning hours of Sunday, Dec. 18, a 21-year-old woman was operating her vehicle in Centereach — about an hour east of Manhattan — when she lost control of the car and crashed into a tree on the side of the road. A passenger in her automobile — a 21-year-old male — suffered unspecified injuries in the wreck and was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment. His current condition is unknown.

The driver was also injured in the wreck, and she, too, was taken to a medical center. However, her injuries are said to be non-life threatening. She has been charged with DWI. As of the latest report, court dates regarding this matter have not been scheduled as of yet.

It does not matter if one lives in New York or elsewhere, when behind the wheel of a car, a driver is responsible for the safety of his or her passengers. In this particular case, the passenger may be entitled to pursue civil actions against the driver in an effort to seek compensation for any losses he has experienced related to the wreck. If it can be proved in court that the driver was driving under the influence or was otherwise negligent at the time of the crash, the victim may be awarded a monetary judgment for any recoverable damages.
