Car accident numbers boom during big snow storm

On Sunday, Jan.24, New York City was reeling under the impact of a blizzard that laid down about 26.8 inches of snow or more. It was at least the second worst accumulation of snow in New York City history. The police had to contend with some 312 accidents in the city prior to a ban on travel that was ordered by Gov. Cuomo to begin at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. Persons who were involved in a car accident, however, were not necessarily shielded from liability for negligence.

Wrong-way car accident has the silver lining of no fatalities

Another wrong-way accident has occurred in New York. This time, however, the perpetrator and the victim will live to tell about it. A 32-year-old man had been driving the wrong way on State Route 590 just before crashing into an oncoming vehicle. After the car accident, both men were trapped in their vehicles and had to be extracted.

Car accident on Brooklyn Bridge results in at least 6 injured

Residents of New York City who live in Manhattan and go into Brooklyn in the morning to work, visit or shop found themselves somewhat stymied on Monday morning, Aug. 17. The lanes to Brooklyn on the Brooklyn Bridge were closed down due to a car accident. A Honda automobile had been disabled on the right-hand eastbound lane at about 4:50 a.m. when a Lexus traveling east rammed into it.

Car accident: Upside-down car trapped under huge tractor trailer

The gymnastic movement of vehicles through the air and over the ground are sometimes startling shows that are occasionally reminiscent of the most dramatic stock car collisions. There was one such horrific accident on Interstate 87 in Yonkers on July 3. A tiny red Honda Civic managed to flip upside-down and violently slide under a massive tractor trailer, where it was dragged for some distance and then remained stuck until its occupants and the upside-down car were dug out. The driver and two passengers survived the car accident but were taken to a New York hospital with what was described as very serious injuries.

Passenger injury reports are limited in tunnel accident

The Lincoln and Holland Tunnels allow about 200,000 vehicles to enter New York City each day. The recent specter of a bus crash inside the Lincoln tunnel raises the fear that another, more serious crash could occur that would cause a massive tragedy. In the recent accident, the driver of a Route 166 bus ran into the rear of another bus carrying a group of eighth-grade children on a graduation trip, resulting in passenger injury to multiple bus occupants. It happened near the Manhattan side of the tunnel.

Red light cameras intended to reduce car accident numbers

One key ingredient of the push to reduce traffic fatalities and injuries in New York City is the use of video cameras installed at certain red light locations. The city has about 150 red lights with cameras installed. The city makes the point that generally this technique is a factor in reducing car accident numbers.

Car accident on I-190 involves 50 vehicles, causes 7 injuries

New York drivers are typically experienced with snow and icy conditions. Probably the most important factor for driving in bad weather is to drive very defensively. One should reduce speed immediately when slippery conditions appear. To avoid a car accident, it is wise to drive as though each car on the road is a potential danger, and to be ready to maneuver one's vehicle away from perceived trouble spots.

Negligent driver enters FDR the wrong way, 4 injured in crash

Another wrong-way accident on one of New York's highways has resulted in several critical injuries and a traffic backup nightmare. It happened on Nov. 13 at about 4 a.m. on the FDR Drive when a Kia sedan entered the highway going the wrong way. The apparently negligent driver, a 33-year-old female, traveled into an exit ramp at East 34th Street and into oncoming traffic, according to the New York Police Department.

I was injured in a car accident -- where do I go for help?

It is not uncommon for drivers in New York to think that car accidents only happen to other people. When they find themselves involved in a collision, they are often unsure of what is expected of them and what to do next. Drivers often think that they have to sit back and wait for their insurance company to pay the medical expenses, not realizing that the insurers will likely do whatever they can to minimize the payout. Accident victims usually benefit from consulting with a motor vehicle accident attorney to guide them through the legalities after a car accident.

Car accident on Brooklyn-Queens Expressway injures 5

Once again, an accident in New York has been reported where one of the drivers was heading in the wrong direction on a major highway. This one occurred on the northbound side of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, not too far from Queens Boulevard. The car accident involved several cars and injured five individuals.
